An unprecedented rain storm is hitting the Saint George area this weekend that could result in flash flooding, 60+ mph winds, and power outages.
The video below is the best resource I’ve found to describe what’s coming and hear recommendations on how to prepare.
Wind and rain appear to be coming starting this evening and could continue as late into next week as Thursday.
Also, for those who haven’t seen it, Washington County officials shared this message on Facebook about the upcoming flood:
The Washington County Emergency Operations Center wants you to be prepared for the storm headed our way this weekend. A strong weather system is expected to bring increased chances of heavy rain and thunderstorms late Saturday into Sunday, along with gusty winds and the potential for isolated flooding.
Now is the time to get ready: secure loose items like lawn furniture, trash cans, and trampolines, trim dead branches, and keep gutters and drains clear of debris. Prepare sandbags ahead of time and review alternate routes in case of flooding.
A limited amount of sandbags can be found at fire stations, but be prepared and go get some from the store ahead of time! Charge your devices, have a plan for power outages, and keep an emergency kit stocked with water, food, flashlights, batteries, and medications. Remember that it only takes 12 inches of moving water to sweep a vehicle away, so if you see water on the road, turn around.
Visit protect.genasys.com to see if you are in a green (good), yellow (be prepared), or red (evacuate) zone. Sign up for emergency alerts and notifications at 911register.com, and find official updates at washco.utah.gov.
As a community here, we’re all about “Experiencing Saint George”, but it turns out the most exciting thing coming to town this weekend is a massive storm. Wanted to let you all know!
Also, this may not be a great weekend to go hiking 😀
Be safe out there!
